The one time my wife cooked (boiled) okra, it was as you described. Like anything, proper preparation is key. Rolled in cornmeal and fried, it probably isn't all that different from breaded, deep-fried zucchini, which I do actually like.
Fried, there is no slime. The heat and lack of moisture see it off. The cornmeal probably soaks up some of it too. I dunno.
