Years ago on Ft. Jackson we were living in post housing. Right before Thanksgiving we had a new family move in right next door. Their kitchen was up against our kitchen...the units were mirror image of one another.
I started baking the turkey and making other food and smelled the most awful odor. I thought maybe a mouse had died under the oven and the heat was making the smell worse. I was taking things out of the drawer under the oven and from the cabinets near the oven...the smell was so bad and it kept getting worse. I finally went and got my neighbor to come over to help me figure out what was going on. She started laughing when she walked in, she recognized the smell. The new neighbors were cooking chitlins. OMG - how could you put something in your mouth that smelled that gawd-awful.
I opened all the windows but still the aroma of baking turkey was overwhelmed by the smell of chitlins. UGH.
