The general principle is that generally, the only people who burn books are religious fundamentalist nutters or fascists and that we really shouldn't be emulating them. If you don't like a book don't read it. You don't have to burn it.

While my inner librarian agrees with you, and shrieks at the very idea of defacing a book in any way, shape, or form, the fact is that book burning is not a crime and is an expression of opinion. Puerile, senseless, and inconsiderate of the feelings of others? Probably, but none of that makes it either illegal or objectively wrong.

Oh it shouldn't be illegal but should be called out as a cowardly and childish act.
