Infinite regress and debunking karma

Doesn't karma allow for misfortune due to misdeeds you've done in your current life? That is, it might be visited on you for something you did  a few years ago rather than something you did in a past life. Just wondering, don't know much about the ins and outs of how karma is supposed to work.

Let's say Alice is suffering right now and she's the first being to ever suffer.
Why is she suffering? Because she tortured Bob.
Regardless of whether Alice tortured Bob in her past life or last Thursday, it can nevertheless be shown that Bob suffered before Alice ever did. 

Would you agree that this doesn't fix the fact that there seems to be a contradiction?
