Of course, there are some studies that find a small correlation between mental illness and violent behaviour. Whether this relationship is causal is hard to determine. But, just like mentally healthy people, mentally ill people are way more likely to be victims of violence than to be violent themselves. And it hardly makes sense to disarm them. The link between mental illness and violence is without a doubt massively overblown in the minds of the public.
