Exactly. We have an emotional reaction because we see it as intuitively fair that whoever got there first + did work on some area gets to keep it. So the rhetoric of homeland is effective for PR purposes.
But there's nothing beyond that emotion/intuition really. If you have a particular goal then it may be better that someone else has that land.
