Laying guilt upon the one of the most basic human drives is a good way to control people.

No doubt, but WHY do they want to control people? To what end?

There's that whole donation thing, priests getting solid payday for, eh, talking one day a week for an hour. There's also larger control matters in that the more money a religious org garners, the more political power it wields.
