Also we have all the knowledge of humans on what we call the internet. Not only can we instantly communicate, we can instantly share knowledge, that is amazing, because knowledge is how humans came to be. Without writing, and speech, there was really no way to pass on knowledge to other generations, hence why humans "discovered" writing. Basically a way to take brain information and place it on another medium to be passed along without the need for a biological organ to hold the information.
Ignorance should be abolished with the amount of information at our disposal.

But I watched fox news last night, the instant communication can be used for horrible reasons as well.

I make a habit of looking things up instantly when some un-informed fox viewer tries to spew shit my way. I correct them by using the vast information at all our disposals, and they retort with sillyness, ad homien attack, or some sort of denial.

The problem with society being educated from the bottom-up (via the intrawebz, debates and whatnot) is that it continues to accrue to the old-fashioned method of RECEIVING information from the top. That way, all you need is a handful of nutjob ignoramuses and you screw up a whole country.

But I think things are changing for the better, to say the least. The "bottom" is becoming increasingly empowered, and most importantly, people are starting to recognise that what they hear from the top can (sometimes) be bullshit too! I find that encouraging :p

You said that people pass on their knowledge through writing. I think people more prevalently pass on their perceptions as well, tainting pure "knowledge" with personal opinion as it goes through him, like paper through a printer. And that was how religion was born!

We're approaching the nexus of an evolutionary convergence (nope. no new-age-hippie-drippie shit; bear with me, if you will).

This comes down to some real simple mathematics. Seven billion people. Global, near-instantaneous communication, and the end of the delusion that we can steal from our neighbors without stealing from ourselves. We've known one race/one planet/one future for a good little while; but we've been able to ignore the fact that "a little more for me is a little less for you," because most of us are short-term/immediate gratification.

Now that there's globalization without a coherent global economic policy, all the cracks are beginning to show. To reduce to variables, tao style, to two; here's what's going on:

The "Trilateral Commission." Whatever you call these fucks, they are the men behind the curtain. They engineered the "housing bubble" in 2007, they're plotting to pop another bubble in 2013. They're greedy, short-sighted, "me first" mentality through inbreeding and entitlements - but once one stops seeing them as evil - one can see what they are doing. Sure, they're cutting themselves the choice pieces of pie. Sure they want to see everybody reduced to a number and enslaved to the corpocracy. But they are future - meaning their machinations are not evil, but rather an evolutionary stratagem based upon known paradigm.

But we'll call them Sith anyway.

And then, there is Jedi. The emergent mind of Gaia. Nodes along the nascent network who know beyond all doubt there is but one and only one "ultimate force" in play. Not money, not markets, not resource; but love.

Love is Void. Love is the emotional dynamic of least entropy. Love is the other singularity so long sought by Truth.

All identity is dual state, due to the illusion of time; thus I know the identity of the universe: Love, and Truth. The heck with I. Welcome to the Age of We.

Can these two systems combine into a single idealistic way of life, though? An amalgamation of both the self-centred inclination that is necessary for the functioning of a (modern) free market and efficient resource allocation, as well as the capacity and motivation to care for one another as fellow human beings?

I mean, you spoke of them as if they were mutually exclusive extremities, and admittedly they do seem to be pretty incompatible. But just maybe..?
