We have unhealthful air in the South Coast Air Basin- a region along California that is bowl-like and holds in smog. The amount of fireworks detonated on the 4th is a major contributor. If it gets over 105° F the inversion layer breaks up due to convection and the smog clears up. But it's worse, short term because all the smog is now hotter, too.
