It ain't that much of name change as it still refers to the same (fictional) person, just in English instead of Polish.
Also it would be quite strange if Stalin would have a problem with nicknames or changing them. It's not like comrade Koba wasn't doing it, though I guess he certainly wouldn't approve of Solzhenitsyn.
If he didn't approve the change it cannot be correct in revolutionary terms! Heathen!
