Like most other Republicans, he sold what principles he had for a shot at power.

It's a common right wing affliction though I don't believe that they have any principles in the first place.

He apparently was a bit more liberal and tolerant as recent as seven or eight years ago. Not that those were actually principles, granted -- they too may have been a facade he adopted in order to enable advancement. But he apparently had a long-term friendship with a transgender woman (like, ten years long) before he adopted the whole Trumpian bigotry thing in the last four years.
