Elon Musk is basically the ultimate prepper. I think his fears are centered on nuclear war or extermination by AI which is why he wants to go to a place difficult to reach. I personally think the Mars plan is crackers - not because the technical problems can't be overcome but because we don't have enough data (no data at all really) on long-term effects of low gravity on humans. The project is folly without that. I also don't see him conducting experiments on advanced farming techniques and life support systems. He should be majorly into R & D in this area.
