Having almost reached player level twenty of fifty possible levels, I have come to the realization that the game primarily wants you to be a warrior. You don't meet your first warrior companion until around that level point.

I did die once in battle, having the first fight against a dragon. Which was not fun.

And there's only one Qunari companion.
