In order not to freak out customers (car manufacturer), my company communicates burning electronic devices as having experienced "rapid corrosion".

You have to love the spin they put on an exploding rocket, "it's a process" "it's all about what we've learned". 

Who knew these things could "disassemble themselves"?

The creativity in making euphemisms in politics and any other part of the public field has no limits. This includes the tech sector: "rapid corrosion" is the word for an INTERNAL fire due to short circuit mostly. When the fire spreads past the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) into the engine compartment, which is full of oil and fuel, and loooots of flammable stuff, then its called a "thermal incident".
