SpaceX’s Starship was launched into space Tuesday evening, but the world’s biggest and most powerful rocket ever built spun out of control and broke up on its latest test flight.

The Tuesday night takeoff was the third test flight in 2025 and the ninth since testing started in April 2023. It was launched from Starbase, Texas, had a smooth takeoff, but problems cropped up while in orbit.

“As if the flight test was not exciting enough, Starship experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly. Teams will continue to review data and work toward our next flight test,” SpaceX said in a Tuesday night post on social media platform X.

“With a test like this, success comes from what we learn, and today’s test will help us improve Starship’s reliability as SpaceX seeks to make life multiplanetary,” the company wrote.

The Starship started to spin out of control about 30 minutes into the mission, while the company — owned by tech billionaire Elon Musk — lost contact with the booster before it hit the water.

“Starship made it to the scheduled ship engine cutoff, so big improvement over last flight! Also, no significant loss of heat shield tiles during ascent,” Musk wrote Tuesday night on social platform X. “Leaks caused loss of main tank pressure during the coast and re-entry phase.”
