Not -everything- is a religion, not even everything we casually refer to as religious is truly so, though some things we often overlook as religious are deeply so. You’ve got superstitions, you s got private beliefs, you’ve got a mountain of ideas about how things are…but not necessarily how they should be. None of this is religion.
To properly clear the bar you’re looking for ideas about the sacred and the profane, about tge shape and contents of a good life and character, which…along with reinforcing observances, holidays, and rituals, draw a community into a moral whole. Think Christmas…sure…but also the Fourth of July.
In the west, for much of the last century, that’s civic nationalism. Now, politically active Christian’s in the west believe that it is because we’ve abandoned Christianity that we are no longer unified….but it’s actually because they’ve abandoned civic nationalism for ethnic nationalism, and pretty overtly so…as Christianity now fails to unite them with other Christian’s who remain united with their fellow civic nationalists.
- and before anyone goes ape shit over nationalism and secular civil religions….I’m not saying it’s The Right Way for us to be, merely relating the history and demographics of western cultural decline of late. When you hear them babble on about how the us sucks and everyone’s laughing at us and the American dream is a joke….rightly or wrongly in-fact….this is what they’re expressing, and simply misattributing to a lapsed belief in super fairies. To them, god is what made us great in an active capacity, rather than the strength and value of our shared institutions.

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
