I feel sorry for the animals too but, hell, that's where all the meat is. As my religious friend back in high school used to say "If god didn't want us to eat the animals he wouldn't have made them out of meat." Seriously it's sweet that you think about it. I have too. I make my peace by realizing all of life eats other life of one form or the other and we're on the menu too.
Like you my wife was raised without religion. Way to choose your parents.
