I've always been a bit puzzled by this, why don't they build tornado proof houses?

What do you mean? That looks like an awesome home. Some of the Domes I have seen are not expensive either. No idea how much that one is however.
If it happens to be tornado proof, it is a lot better than all the sticks and brick homes tossed like toys everywhere by the tornadoes.
