In the story the character was biologically immortal. It was a little more complex than that (and the story idea is currently on the back-burner), but one of the central themes was dealing with meaning and purpose in the face of an endless (or very long) life. I imagined the character being very lonely given that anyone they've ever been close to has died. I tried to evoke a feeling of despair that perhaps grasped them when they thought of the past. I chose the organ because of its indefinite sustain and also because I just love the sound of it.
This isn't the only kind of music I write; I'm actually working on a metal instrumental now and I've done a few orchestral type arrangements for pieces I like.
I thought there would be a story behind it. I've written creepy/depressing orchestral/organ music like this before, and it is always based on a character I've created in one of my stories or on a specific situation.
"Sisters, you know only the north; I have traveled in the south lands. There are churches there, believe me, that cut their children too, as the people of Bolvangar did--not in the same way, but just as horribly. They cut their sexual organs, yes, both boys and girls; they cut them with knives so that they shan't feel. That is what the Church does, and every church is the same: control, destroy, obliterate every good feeling. So if a war comes, and the Church is on one side of it, we must be on the other, no matter what strange allies we find ourselves bound to."
