Wikepedia defines a geek as follows:
Wikipedia Wrote:
- A person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest. This definition is very broad but because many of these interests have mainstream endorsement and acceptance, the inclusion of some genres as "geeky" is heavily debated. Persons have been labeled as or chosen to identify as physics geeks, mathematics geeks, engineering geeks, sci-fi geeks, computer geeks, various science geeks, movie and film geeks (cinephile), comic book geeks, theatre geeks, history geeks, music geeks, art geeks, philosophy geeks, literature geeks, historical reenactment geeks and roleplay geeks.
I'm in turmoil with the term if I'm honest. I have a massive interest in physics and I'm pretty darn good at doing the work, but when people call me a geek it always feels like there's some sort of social aspect to it, as if I'm socially inept. Truth is, I'm fairly pleasant when it comes down to it It's easy enough to get along with pretty much anybody. Okay, admitedly, I spend most of my time alone on this laptop or out by myself, but that doesn't mean anything, surely?
As far as physics goes though, I'm a mega-geek. I pretty much wrote my own book explaining (with diagrams) everything on my Unit 1 physics module, including background information and historical relevence. It was made 50% for revision and... No scratch that, it was made 20% for revision, 80% for fun I do love talking and writing about physics. I'm a young Carl Sagan
Definitely a geek!
PS. You know you're a geek when you're physics teachers sends you some work in an e-mail to do over the holidays, and your reaction is to smile.
PPS. You KNOW you're a geek when you're on holiday and see what appears to be a transitional form between the tyrannosaurus and the humble duck, you find this amusing, you take a picture of it, and finally you go on to share it with your atheist friends on the internet and laugh about this evolutionary gemstone.
