The idea that atheists are miserable is a broad generalization unworthy of debunking. It has been in my experience, however, that atheists are more prone to misery than believers. I believe this has to do with the believer having the purpose in life handed to them on a silver platter while the atheist must go down an arduous road of self-reflection and uncertainty.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
