Happiness or depression are part of evolution independent of labels. EVERYONE that has lived or is living now has had ups and downs in life, some more than others either way.
Atheism doesn't make you happy or sad. Biological makeup and family or societal input are the factors. Genes and environment and conditions at the moment you are happy or sad are what ALL individual humans go through.
Believers want so desperately to see themselves as divinely chosen and being above nature. I have seen plenty of sadness and depression among believers, regardless of sect or social status or class or race. Our mental state as a species is not dependent on holding any particular label, our emotions are a product of mere evolution.
