It seems evidence is mounting that the Neaderthal lineage didn't die out, and instead became merged with homo sapiens who first came to the middle east and Europe. So one might argue Neaderthals didn't really go extinct.
There is also tentalizing hints that Homo Sapiens who went east also interbred with another, hitherto undescribed species of genus, and thus preserved that species from extinciton as well.
