Generally its a pain in the arse to put down, say a beached whale for example by minimising its suffering, usually by the time the decision is made the poor thing is steadily crushing itself under its own weight and already in agony from severe dehydration.
Regardless of the whatever methods are available to use to minimise the cetacean's suffering, that's not what the fucking whalers are doing as we speak, obviously.
