I think it would have escaped the English history books initially out of embarrassment, but now, all this time later, unless one is specifically investigating the origins of the U.S., it probably is not particularly important on a world scale. Much like 9/11. Huge deal here, eleven years on, not so much elsewhere anymore. Every country has events which are esoterically important, but that doesn't mean the world needs to care.
