Directed is probably a poor choice of words, it carries baggage which does not apply. As far as we can tell, nothing is "directing" anything at all.

Offhand, because it's useful. Just taking a look at some of your other posts in this regard, specifically the notion that it doesn't "add anything". Really? Consciousness doesn't add anything? So, the fact that the large majority of dominant forms of life on this planet are all (to varying degrees) conscious creatures doesn't seem to suggest that consciousness might add something?

We'd be playing fast and loose with the words conscious and peoples, sure, but we can imagine a great many things. If you meant that we can imagine the same rock (within this universe) filled with "less sentient" lifeforms, yeah, we can imagine that. Not only can we imagine it, it just so happened to be te case, once upon a time. And?
