Whether or not the true motive is money and power, the act is justified and carried out by way of religion. The Taliban themselves gives explanation of their atrocities, and it is always for reasons of fundamentalist Islamic law.

Well, if this is going to turn into a theological discussion about whether the actions of the Taliban are in accordance with the moslem religion, I'd say that the Taliban give explanations according to their own motives, not according to law. Even though they enforce some laws that are in accordance with the islamic law, the way they enforce this is not in accordance with the fiqh.
