So that when you argue/discuss something, regardless of the subject, you'll know what you're talking about.
How many of those idiots who argue against socialized medicine and death panels actually know what it is? How many Americans think this is a Christian Nation and have no idea what the founding fathers really envisioned? These horrible misunderstandings come from a severe lack of even the most basic education in American History and Politics. Even the most simplest of facts can help you better understand various arguments and debates.
Any knowledge is better than no knowledge. College courses are specifically designed so that not only do you specialize but you still have basic knowledge of other subjects so you don't become too specialized. It's not a perfect system, but I think it works fairly well. There simply is too much knowledge to learn everything quickly, sadly enough. Once you finish college you'll have the rest of your life to specialize in what you want.
I wish I could go back to college. :/
