I would think there are much more atheists in prison (well to clarify, much more than those who label themselves atheists) who don't want to identify themselves as thus. In prison, unless you can back up your uniqueness with overt threats of violence, you try your best to stick to the norm...if it is expected that you are to believe in God, you say you believe in God. I have heard this is the same way for troops in the US military.
Others just turn to religion out of shear desperation.
Actually atheists do tend to get their morality from the Bible and older religious codecs as well...for example, whenever you say someone should be a good Samaritan, you're referencing the Bible.
