That's why we're still pushing coal, even though we know that particular resource will run out in about 50 years. We aren't making the necessary investments in our energy future. We are simply saying "Drill baby, drill" or mine as the case may be.

Well our politicians want to be reelected aswell, but here all paries agree that climat change is real, that dependency on Saudi oil is rubish, drilling in the baltic sea might have horrible enviormental sideefects and the general german population accepts that climat change is real.
I feel a bit sorry for you, but as soon as the americans will see how well of europe will be without oil they will try the same.
And germany is by far not the most progressive on that sector, just look at Denmark, by 2020 an estemated 80 percent of their energy will be green energy.

Refurbing our energy industries will be costly and inefficient at least in the short term (and perhaps for quite a long time). That might have something to do with how well developed our current energy industries are.

I know what you mean, but this kind of mentality doesn`t realy exist here. Everyone accepts that policies need years to have an effect and projects started by one goverment are mostly continued by many administrations afterwards.
What does matter, is how efficiant the job is done, and currently it is not done well.
Big energy companies, small energy companies, the conservative party in the coalition goverment controling the minestry of energy and the liberterian party in the coalition goverment controling the minestry of inviorment are currently arguing over who has to take the lead in this current process. - thereby nothing is going forward, or things are going forward slowly - it actualy seems like individuals are more interested in having their name in the history books for being the leading figure in this project rather than thinking of the good for this country
