I hope you are not implying that many atheists that claim they were former Christians were not really Christian because they didn't have a 'personal relationship with Christ'.
If that's where you're heading, please dissuade yourself of that idea. There are plenty of former Christians that had experiences that they truly believed were 'witness of the holy spirit'.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
