The OT god does seem to have trouble with his emotions, namely his temper, and his character does appear to be wholly inconsistent with the touchy-feely god of the NT. It's almost as if they are two entirely different gods, each created for a different purpose. 
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
