These types of weapons became strictly controlled in the United States in 1934 with the passage of the National Firearms Act (NFA). Civilian ownership of these types of firearms is currently allowed per the conditions set by NFA, and the regulations haven't changed much in almost 80 years. During that time frame I am aware of only one conviction of a person for using a legally owned machine gun to kill someone. In that case an Ohio police officer was convicted of killing an informant with his privately owned MAC-11.
The current system seems to be working just fine with regards to legally owned machine guns. Why change it?
