It probably went something like this: If you live a life seeking, and even if you do not find what others have found, then you would have lived a profitable life, and will be rewarded in the next.
This principle is based off a teaching Paul explains to the Corinthians. In that we are all members of the same body, and even though each member of the body may have a different function (experiences God differently) it does not mean any member is any less apart of the body of Christ.

I wouldn't worry about it...
If every tongue will confess and every knee will bow like written in the text, then you adhere to his "requirements" for salvation...
