The reason could be any number of things. It may be an extreme form of pain management, a one upped version of us going into shock. While I haven't had a near death experience, I have gone into shock before and that was interesting to say the least. I can only imagine what the DMT near death trip is like. I don't think we know why it happens, but we more or less know what is happening and we can be fairly of what is not happening.
I don't think we can ever be fairly sure of what is not happening if we think 96% of this universe is unknown.
