At the time Thatcher took office, businesses in other countries had become reluctant to do business with British companies because of the frequency with which strikes shut down entire sectors of the British economy. England was known as 'the sick man of Europe' for its dysfunctional economy.
Unions are necessary but they are like any other bureacracy: their nature is to grow and consume until they run out of resources or an outside force stops them. Strength is good, but it shouldn't be limitless.
Thatcher was far from perfect, economically speaking, but the strengthening of the British economy while she was in office wasn't coincidental.
