I'd just like to say that with all the elements currently in this thread that I'm the daughter of an ex Army Ranger (settled now as a gov't lawyer) who was also deployed in various places all over the world in his life, the last being Kuwait when I was in 6th grade, and he thought it was great until he had a family. When he had to do a few things like training down in FL, he used to fuck with the other guys by making sounds like alligators do - that deep gulping noise. To this day, he has a stuffed baby alligator that he kept as a pet until it died (or my grandmother killed it, depending on who you ask). This was also the man who would drive after roadrunners during tank training.
In other words, I think you military peeps are a strange lot.
I didn't realize that religion was such a big deal with the DoD though. On the other hand, I hear a lot of stories coming from the female end of military things like chaplains telling female officers to 'pray' about the fact that they were raped, etc. Weird ass shit.
Yes, we are a strange lot. The US Military is overall deeply religious and Republican. There are few Atheist, but very few are out of the closet. It is depending on the tone the command sets. Yes, I had a chaplin try to convert me after my failed surgery. It does happen.
