What do you mean by "unsupported"? They're legal tender.
There is no such thing as intrinsic value in economics. Every possible medium of exchange imaginable, no matter what it is, will only ever be worth as much as other people think it is worth. Gold is just as intrinsically worthless as paper, even though it is a finite resource and paper is (practically) not. Gold is worth something only because we believe it is, and the only reason we believe it is worth something is because our primitive ancestors thought gold was really pretty.
I remember reading the Dark Tower novels, depicting the main character's world as one in which plain scrap paper was worth more than gold because while you could just find gold in the ground if you knew where to look, nobody knew how to make paper anymore, and it had more practical uses than gold in a collapsing post-industrial society.
