The technical origin of the term arose from the mobile warfare of WWII. It was found that for defending a position single shots were more effective but for assaulting (attacking) a position full auto fire was more effective. In WWII type warfare one could be defending in the morning and attacking in the afternoon. Carrying two different weapons was impractical. Thus a selective fire weapon was the solution and got the name.
