In my sect, the most controversial doctrine was the supposed translation of prophecy from people speaking in tongues. Some people believed it worked, and some didn't. While working as a music minister, I found out they were rehearsing the prophecies. This was likely the first seed of doubt in my faith.
This, of course, is mild compared to the doctrines of Calvinism, which I utterly despise. And you're right, @goodnews, if Christianity didn't have any sects or conflicting doctrines, it would have a much stronger case for being true. But doesn't the fact that such extreme diversity exists in the same religion indicate that it isn't true?
