I'm probably not the one to be giving advice on such matters, as I'm very solitary person. But my impression has been that one of the best ways to engage another person is to express a genuine interest in that other person, in who they are: ask them questions. Presumably, Socrates taught solely by asking questions. That would be hard. I'd say that's expert level. But there are ways to get along, if you're willing to be flexible both in what you give and what you take.
Anyway, as many problems as I got, I'm probably the last person to be giving advice.

(To be honest, I find my best social outlet in book clubs and discussion groups. I'm kinda shy, but if I'm focused on the ideas, I lose my self-consciousness and can join in. Maybe you need a similar gimmick. Or maybe not. Just a thought.)
