I've never found anything else to discuss that's as rich with opportunities to identify fallacies as the existence of God. It's good exercise for the mind without requiring more intelligence than I have to work with.

I visited Las Vegas last summer, so I have brought swimming trunks to a desert. Although your analogy wouldn't track even if it was better, as showing up to a discussion board ready to discuss is like showing up to a skating rink with skates.

If it were, we wouldn't allow Christians, would we?

On a discussion board entitiled Atheist Forums? I did not see that coming. Does that mean I have more reasons to be at Theist Forums than I do to be here (assuming theists could set aside their differences enough to share a forum)? Could you elaborate on those reasons, please?

His friend is an advertisement for how damaging a dogmatic religion can be to one's thought processes. Most of us were brought up to believe in Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy, too. We didn't fight those 'formations', we just grew out of them.

The only arena where relying on emotion and intuition can be argued to give more reliable results than considered analysis is in making split-second decisions. When your heart reaches a conclusion at variance with considered reflection when you've had time to do so, it's usually the heart that's wrong. Witness how often people stay in bad relationships long after they know they're in a bad relationship. Pretty much any time someone tells you to listen with your heart instead of your mind, they're trying to sell you something you shouldn't buy.

Something that would be bad advice in nearly any other context suddenly becomes good advice when looking for God? I don't think so. It is the nature of the heart to tell you what you WANT to hear. If what you want to hear happens to be the case, your heart gets the credit. Here's the truth: search for the kingdom of whichever god you were raised to believe in within your heart hard enough, and you will always find it, no matter what the god. Because you can convince yourself of anything, if you try hard enough.
