Chapter 2: The Cow
Written 622-624 Median expect last 3 verses those are Meccan. The timing is important because it helps explain what was going on in Mohammad's life at the time. He just arrived in Median. He fled Mecca do to what I understand to be religious hostility. In Median, he set up the first Islamic state. Since most of his followers were traders and not farmers (Median was a agricultural society.) For debatable reasons he started sending out raiding parties on the caravans. He knew the routes well since he had lived for 15+ years as a merchant. The raids not only helped to grow the wealth of the early Muslims but also gained him fame and followers.
Back to the Cow, it is the longest sura in the Qur'an, Making up 1/10th of the entire book.
One of the major themes of this chapter is guidance.
The first half is addressed to Muslims and the second half to Muslims.
http://quran.com/2
Verse 1-20
These verses divide people into believers(verse 3,4&5) unbelievers(verse 6&7) and hypocrites(verse 8-20).
Verse 16-20 are 2 parables describing what happens to different hypocrites.
EDIT: I might add more. I need a break.
