You can usually set it up beforehand so you don't have to be asked to swear on the bible or anything like that. You can usually talk to one of the lawyers, or if there are none you can try and talk to the judge. If you can't do that, when it comes time to affirm on the bible, all you have to do is turn to the judge and say "You honor I would like to request a secular option."
