From my understanding of the profile of murderers, that behaviour comes about from traumatic experiences in childhood and being brutalised, ignored and abused by their parents and other people.
Jeffrey Dahmer is a stark exception to your rule. While many serial killers did suffer certain abuses growing up many do not.
They grow up fantasizing about killing over and over until they eventually do it. Then it becomes like a drug to them. Every time it's not quite perfect enough. So they repeat, and repeat, until they either are caught or die.
They never just stop.
How do you know he wasn't abused?
