I almost lost my shit when my mom told me that she spanked my daughter one time. She tried to explain that I never specified that she couldn't spank, but the real question is, did I ever expressly tell her that it's allowed? Emma doesn't remember it, but I'm never going to forget it; even if inflicting pain on someone doesn't hurt the person forever, permanent harm is always accomplished to one person or another. I know spanking may seem a minor thing in the grand scheme of things, but I equated my mother to barbarism in that moment.
