Well my friend, one core idea to nationalism is the "pride factor". People who lack pride, purpose and a common identity will not conform to the notion of nationalism, nor any social policies associated with it.
Some nationalists who are from nations based on common culture and language, but not ethnicity or ancestry use culture and language to promote unity.
Germans are all of the same ancestry, the Germanic tribes of the old. They are of the same ethnicity. So it is only logical for them to use this as a basis in addition to the aforementioned langauge and culture.
However, to add, a nation must also have a sense of national greatness and ancestral pride. This is where national myths come in. Such myths are sometimes already existent, but in case of Germany, Hitler created one out of nothingness. That the Germans were from a mythical "aryan race", existent in reality, but not connected to the Germans beyond being of the same language family(indo-european).
He also took a symbol of the same indo-european association, but not necessarily Germanic in itself, and used it as a symbol for his party.
He was indeed a clever person, though I believe he overdid it.

Racism is progress. You eventually progress to a state of reality that in this world, you're on your own.
You come to love, protect and depend on your race, because there is none other than your own race that will do the same.
Both nationalism and racism are dangerous ideas used to separate humanity instead of uniting it. They are the bases for irrational hatred.
When combined, they are evil.
Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.
