Being "one" requires you to have be the same in every aspect possible. Not just anatomy.
In face of a global catastrophe, people get together because their interests require them to do so. A temporary alliance so to say.
Nothing more.
Differences are not petty, they are the outcome of thousands of years of different linguistical and cultural evolution my friend. You cannot toss these aside.
