The word does have an older and broader meaning than that given it by Darwin. Gradual change over time seems like the gist of it. Biological evolution is devoid of teleological purpose. Giraffes didn't grow their necks longer so that they could reach the upper branches, etc.
Personally I think there is no basis for answering the question: is the development of star stuff into organic material, multicellular organisms and sentient beings headed somewhere? Does the universe in some sense know what it is up to? Is there a goal in any of this? In the total absence of evidence, I have to answer "probably not".
