That is an utterly wrong notion.
The islamic world use to be more tolerant than the west right into the 17th century.
And the idea that the renaissance was something like an age of tolerants or whatever is probably an American romantisation of European history.
During the Renaissance ancient Greek culture may have had a revival, but there were also more witch hunts than before and there certainly was more religious violence as catholics and protestants started and kept slaughtering each other over the course of 200 to 300 years.
The movement of wahabism which is mainly responsible for todays radical islamist movement came into existance in Saudi Arabia during the 19th century.
And it is the radical islamist movement of wahabism which would poison the islamic world.
Ironicaly, as Europe started to become more and more tolerant, the arab world (because it was mainly a development that took place in arab and not the entire islamic world) got more and more viciously fanatisised.
